I Love You
Think about those three words we use “I Love You”, what do they really mean? What do we mean when we say it? Better yet what is love? Think about how many times in a day you say, “love” and do you even think about what you are saying it about?
Love is an amazing thing, well if we knew what love really is. Think about some of the ways you use the word “love”. I use it so many different ways and probably most of them are not really “love”. We might say, “I love white chocolate caramel mochas” or “I love your shirt”. Those are ways we use it daily but what are some ways we use it less often? You might say, “I love you” to your boyfriend or girlfriend of two weeks or I would love to go to the ocean. Are any of those really proper uses of “love”?
Merriam Webster defines Love as:
1) Strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties.
2) Attraction based on sexual desire: affection and tenderness felt by lovers
3) Affection based on admiration, benevolence, or common interests
I look at that and see that what is “Common Use” of the word falls into that but maybe “love” is so much more than that. Maybe “love” has a stronger meaning and connection to who we are. Maybe what we think “love” is and have been taught by society is so far from the truth.
Think about the verse John 15:13 Greater love has no man than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. Love here implies that it is a type of feeling and action together. It also says that it is done expressed towards friends. If you are willing to give up your life for someone you really must care for someone. Would you do that for an item that might bring you enjoyment for another 15 minutes of your life? What about that person you just meet two weeks ago? Do you even know them well enough to really care about them? Sure you might say you would and that warm feeling you get when around them but would you really?
When I look at “love” and really start to dig into what it really means I cant help but think about a few things.
• Love is amazing
• Love leaves me in awe
• Love is something so great I don’t know if I can ever fully understand it
• How can I love my enemies?
• Love, why would anyone Love me?
I am sure you think many things along those lines. I am sure you could even add some good ones to that list.
I know for sure that someone does love me fully. They care for me and want the best for me. However willing to let me make poor choices in life but encourages me to make good ones. Always ready to lift me back up when I fall. Jesus Christ loves me more than any person. He gave His life for me. His example shows what true love is. Read about Him and what He did. If you don’t know what love looks like then how will you know what to do? Bankers study real money because it never changes. When they come across a fraud they know it because they see the changes.
Keep focused on what is right. Look to the good examples in your life. Keep moving forward; don’t stop because you feel comfortable.
